Vital Skills for Life
Local residents and employees found out about opportunities to teach literacy, numeracy and 'English as a Second or Other Language' (ESOL) at a special awareness-raising event at All Saints Church on Monday 22 May.
Hosted by Lewisham College and New Cross Gate NDC, the event provided a fascinating programme of workshops demonstrating 'Skills for Life' training, including progressive new ways of teaching adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL.
Also on tap at the event was vital information, advice and guidance for people wanting to develop their teaching skills in their work with the community, and information on the different courses that are currently being offered locally at Lewisham College.

Over 300 residents visited the site of the new £7m NDC centre to see the winning designs for themselves on Saturday. The NDC held the family fun day to encourage locals to give their input into the design of the open space. Over 100 adults and children gave their views on the proposed designs and added some ideas of their own. The younger children added colour and creativity to the consultation by creating their own designs out plasticine.
Residents were kept entertained by the excellent steel band from Deptford. The kids entertained themselves on bouncy castles, bungy basketball, sumo wrestling and giant bouncy boxing. unfortunatly the day was cut all too short at around 4pm due to a drowning downpour. The NDC would like to thank all the residents for their feedback.

A JOY realised
Just Older Youths (JOY) took a major step towards independence recently when it held its inaugural general meeting at which a constitution was adopted and management committee elected. This is the culmination of months of preparation work by dedicated JOY members with the support of Lifestyle Opportunities for Older People (LOOP) and the NDC team.
JOY has sprung from the line-dancing, healthy walks, tai-chi and seated exercise activities provided for older residents by the NDC and facilitated by LOOP. Because funding support through LOOP will end in 2008, it is vital for the group to start planning for the future if the healthy activities undertaken by the group were to be sustained. The first step was taken at that inaugural general meeting when they formed themselves as a constituted body. This will enable them to draw down funding to sustain their activities, now and in the future.
At the inaugural meeting, the proposed constitution was adopted by those present after a question and answer session. The constitution was developed by the steering group which in previous months worked hard to shape a constitution which their members could support.
A full management committee was also elected and they will have their first meeting later in May when they will set about planning the future for Just Older Youths. For more information, contact Helen Bloomfield on 020 8291 0443.
